Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur
Unadulterated honesty.
A collection of poems and prose of confessions and self expression. Of realisation and evaluation of the love and pain Rupi has endured. That all woman endure.
She describes it best, the book is her heart in your hands.
It feels beautiful but fragile. The pain seeps into your chest. I would think of the important girls in my life, reading it as though it were their words. It’s heart breaking.
Rupi splits the book into four chapters. Each reflecting a different period of her life;
the hurting
the loving
the breaking
the healing
It’s refreshingly relatable, even as a man. I appreciated reading about love through a female’s perspective. It’s incredibly sensitive and raw. And as I said from the beginning, it’s honest and that’s where the poems draw their power.
As someone who has gone through the waves of a toxic relationship. Trying to make it work. Poems that shed light upon that pain spoke to me.
“neither of us are happy
but neither of us wants to leave
so we keep breaking one another
and calling it love”
The book is a quick read. But I know I’ll return from time to time to read my favourite poems. It’s also filled with beautifully minimalistic illustrations that compliment the delicate touch the words possess.
